Fire Pit Calculator
Plan a fire pit ring with the right number of blocks. Choose round or square, enter the inside size and number of rows, and see blocks, base gravel, leveling sand and fill stone.
| Detail | Result |
|---|---|
| Outside size | 4.3 ft |
| Base gravel (6 in) | 0.27 cu yd |

How Fire Pit Calculator Works
Four quick steps happen behind the screen every time you change a number.
Finds the wall line
For a round pit the circle is taken through the middle of the wall. For a square pit each side is measured the same way.
Counts blocks in one row
The length of that line is divided by the block length and rounded up.
Stacks the rows
Blocks per row are multiplied by the rows you choose, then a breakage allowance is added.
Works out the base
The outside footprint gets six inches of gravel and one inch of sand, and the inside gets fill stone.
How to Use Fire Pit Calculator
Five quick steps take you from a tape measure to a usable result.
- Choose the shapeRound pits look softer. Square pits suit modular blocks with no cuts.
- Enter the inside sizeThree feet across is common for a seating group of four to six people.
- Pick the rowsThree or four rows of 4 inch blocks gives a wall of 12 to 16 inches.
- Type your block sizeRead the length, depth and height on the block label.
- Order blocks and stoneTake the block count, gravel and sand to your supplier. Use fire rated stone or lava rock inside.

Formula Used in Fire Pit Calculator
These are the standard formulas behind every result, so you can check the numbers yourself.
Round wall line
d is the inside diameter in feet, and C is in inches.
Square wall line
Corners are counted once.
Blocks
Round up each row to a whole block.
Worked example
A round pit 3 ft across inside, with 12 inch long blocks that are 8 inches thick, has a wall line of 3.1416 × (36 + 8) = 138 inches. That is 12 blocks per row. Three rows need 36 blocks, or 38 with 5 percent extra.
Fire Pit Block Chart
Blocks for a round fire pit at common inside sizes and three rows of 12 inch blocks.
| Size | Blocks per row | Total blocks | Outside size |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 ft inside | 9 | 29 | 3.3 |
| 3 ft inside | 12 | 38 | 4.3 |
| 3.5 ft inside | 14 | 45 | 4.8 |
| 4 ft inside | 15 | 48 | 5.3 |
| 5 ft inside | 18 | 57 | 6.3 |
| 6 ft inside | 21 | 67 | 7.3 |
Includes 5 percent extra for breakage.
Fire Pit Blocks by Rows
Total blocks for a 3 ft round pit at different wall heights.
| Size | Total blocks | Wall height | Fill stone, cu yd |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 rows | 26 | 0.7 | 0.09 |
| 3 rows | 38 | 1 | 0.09 |
| 4 rows | 51 | 1.3 | 0.09 |
| 5 rows | 63 | 1.7 | 0.09 |
| 6 rows | 76 | 2 | 0.09 |
Wall height uses 4 inch tall blocks.
Common Fire Pit Mistakes
Four slips that throw off the result, and how to avoid them.
Using the wrong wall line
The outside of the ring is longer than the inside. Measure through the middle of the wall to get the block count right.
Using wet or porous stone
Damp river rock can crack in heat. Choose fire rated block and dry lava rock for the inside.
Building on grass
Fire pits need a level, non flammable base. Prepare gravel and sand on bare ground.
Ignoring local rules
Some areas limit pit size and distance from buildings. Check the rules before you build.
Tools You Must Know
One number is rarely enough for a yard project. These calculators pair well with this one.
Fire Pit Calculator FAQs
Quick answers before you order materials.

How many blocks do I need for a fire pit?
Find the length of the wall line, divide by the block length, and multiply by the rows. The calculator adds a breakage allowance.
How big should a fire pit be?
Three to four feet inside suits most backyards. Keep it at least 10 to 25 feet from buildings, based on local rules.
How many rows of blocks should a fire pit have?
Three to four rows makes a wall of 12 to 16 inches, which is a good seat and fire height.
What goes under a fire pit?
Six inches of compacted gravel and an inch of leveling sand give a stable, drained base.
What should I put inside a fire pit?
Use lava rock, fire brick or dry crushed stone. Avoid wet river rock.
Is the Fire Pit Calculator free?
Yes. It is free to use, with no signup.
