Questions about our calculators
Short answers before you start measuring.
Are Backyard Calculators free to use?
Yes. Every calculator is free, and you do not need an account or an email address to use one.
How accurate are the results?
Results follow standard material formulas and use the measurements you enter, which makes them reliable for planning and shopping. For structural work such as decks, pergolas and retaining walls, confirm final sizes with your local building code or a contractor.
How much extra material should I order?
Most projects need 5 to 10 percent more than the exact figure to cover cuts, breakage and uneven ground. Calculators that need a waste allowance include a field for it.
Can I use feet, inches, yards and metres?
Yes. Enter measurements the way you took them, and the calculator converts them for you.
Which backyard projects do you cover?
Six categories: decks, fences, patios, sheds, pools and gardens, plus single-purpose tools for gravel, topsoil, pavers, fire pits, sprinklers, lighting and more.
Do the calculators work on my phone?
Yes. The layout adjusts to phone screens, so you can calculate while you are standing in the yard with a tape measure.
How We Develop Our Tools
Every calculator follows the same four stages, so results stay clear, consistent and easy to check.
Start from standard formulas
We begin with the established formulas for each material, such as volume, area, spacing and coverage.
Check against worked examples
Results are compared with examples calculated by hand, so the numbers hold up.
Add real-world allowances
Waste, overlap and unit conversion are built in, because projects rarely match the plan exactly.
Improve from your feedback
When a reader reports a problem or asks for a feature, we review the calculator and update it.
